Organization Profile

Singapore Thong Chai Medical Institution (STCMI) was established as a charitable clinic in 1867. Since the beginning and for more than 140 years, the Institution has adhered to the principles advocated by its founders of providing free medical consultation and traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) to the public regardless of race, religion and nationality without prejudice.

We are located at 50 Chin Swee Road. Every day, more than 700 patients come to our Outpatient and Special clinics for free medical treatments. We open six days a week, Monday to Friday, from 8 am to 8:30 pm; Saturday, from 8 am to 5 pm. The Outpatient clinic located at ground floor, provides general and acupuncture treatments; the Special clinic located at 4th floor, provides consultations and treatments in five special disciplines namely Infertility, Acupuncture for Stroke, Oncology, Nephropathy, and Diabetes & Hypertension.

At present, we have 25 MOH-registered and qualified physicians, of which two have obtained the title of Chief Physician, five are PhD(TCM) holders and four are Master Degree(TCM) holders. The quality of their work and professionalism are well-respected and commended by the community.

In addition, STCMI operates a TCM Library and a permanent Chinese herbal exhibit, which are open to the public.

In 2003, with generous support from the public, the Thong Chai Institute of Medical Research was inaugurated. It was commissioned to raise the professional standard of TCM practitioners and to carry out research on TCM.

To this end, numerous courses and workshops have been conducted. Highly qualified professionals are specially brought from overseas to share their expertise and knowledge with the researchers.

For centuries, the Institution's daily operating expenses are mainly funded by the donations from the caring and generous public without any subsidies from the government. Besides rental income, we still need to source for external funding to meet our operational budget. The responsibility of performing these critical tasks is assigned to a group of dedicated volunteers who organize numerous fund-raising activities throughout the year. Their caring and good deeds provide hope and loving to our patients who desire for speedy recovery.

The Thong Chai Building which houses our clinic was built in 1976. Having gone through more than 30 years of operations, it needs a facelift. With the popularity of TCM in recent years and the aging population in Singapore, the number of patients going for TCM treatment will increase. To cater for this increase, our clinic has to expanded and medical facilities and equipment need to be replaced and upgraded.

To raise funds for the upgrade, we held the first ever mega TV fund-raising show ‘Thong Chai Charity Night’ on 21 March 2010 at Mediacorp Auditorium. During the show, our Charity Ambassadorinternational superstar Mr Jackie Chan, together with overseas and local star artistes and philanthropists joined us in this meaningful event to provide a great and exciting performance. Eventually, we raised funds of $8.39 million, which is the record in recent local TV Fund-raising programmes.

We sincerely hope that you are keen to support us. Your kind and generous donations will not only benefit our many patients, but also will help STCMI's unwavering efforts in building Singapore towards a kind and philanthropic society.

STCMI is an approved charity organisation with IPC status by Singapore government, all donations received will be 2.5 times tax deductible.
