Menopause marks the cessation of a woman’s menstrual cycles, generally occurring in mid 40s to 50s. It is a natural biological phase. While most women can transit through this phase without much discomfort, some experience symptoms such as irregular menstrual cycles, hot flushes, night sweats, insomnia, mood swings, weight gain, dry skin, hair loss, and bone loss. These symptoms can present in different combinations, with varying intensity and duration. In severe cases, menopausal symptoms can disrupt daily lives. This is the result of naturally declining reproductive hormones, as our bodies cruise through a different phase of life. From TCM viewpoint, as a woman ages, her Kidney Qi declines along with its function, and this declination becomes especially prominent after the age of 49. During this biological transition, the body is in a delicate balance of Yin and Yang, which can be easily upset by any internal or external disturbances. Although the deterioration of Kidney function is fundamental to the manifestations of menopausal symptoms, other organs also participate in this change. Therefore, to provide a holistic treatment, TCM practitioners generally approach these clinical presentations by nourishing the Kidney, regulating the Liver and Spleen function, and calming the mind.

In cases where menopausal symptoms are mild and tolerable, you can try out some simple remedies to help ease your discomfort.
