When STCMI moved in to its present Thong Chai building in 1976, there was a plan to set up a TCM Library. The objective of it is to permeate and promote TCM, to elevate the level in TCM treatment, and to provide a platform for reference for our in-house physicians and for TCM research to the community at large who are interested in TCM and its culture.
During the initial stage, the donation of $100,000 from the Board of Directors of Peng Yi School accelerated the setting up of the TCM Library. The then board of STCMI named the TCM library as 'Peng Yi School Memorial Hall' to commemorate the generosity and kindness of the school.
In 1978, nine committee members were selected by the STCMI Board to task the setting up of TCM Library. At the same time, the then Chief Librarian of University of Singapore 陈秀锦女士 was invited to act as our consultant to provide library management solutions and book cataloguing. It made the management of the library systematic and the operations efficient.
The library was officially opened by our then Chairman Datuk Sri Ng Quee Lam on 19th Aug 1979.
TCM Library Organisation
The Library Committee which is formed under the STCMI Board is responsible for the strategy, management and operations of the library. It is led by a Head of the Committee, assisted by a Deputy Head with 4 committee members. In addition, there is one librarian responsible for the daily operations and management of the library.
The TCM Library has created an arena for medical practitioners and TCM enthusiasts. The library provides a wide range of detailed information for research and a platform for development.
Initially, the number of books collection was only 4,546 with around 30 over periodicals. However, with the concerted efforts, strategy and leadership of the library Committees of every term, new books were constantly added and now it has reached a total of over 20,000 books collection and over 90 periodicals, reference books and TCM magazines which range from TCM treatment, medical care, health management to daily essential lifestyle, beauty and domestic hygiene.
Some of collections are precious collection of books that are no longer in circulation and deemed extremely valuable. All these books were passed on from generation to generation. We hope everyone will continue to treasure and appreciate this valuable knowledge.
