Dear Friend,
 Introduction
Singapore Thong Chai Medical Institution was established in 1867 to offer free medical
care and treatments to the poor and needy. For the past 142 years, we remain steadfast in
our mission statement – dutifully providing free Traditional Chinese Medical (TCM)
consultation and medicine to all our patients, six days a week, regardless of race, religion and
nationality. Currently, we employ 24 in-house physicians to attend to more than 700 patients
daily. Over the years, we have also created five specialist clinics, namely Infertility,
Nephropathy, Hypertension & Diabetes, Acupuncture and Oncology, to provide for the need
of patients requiring specialized treatments.
Besides our main mission mentioned above, we have also kept up with times by putting
resources into advancing the research and development of TCM, so as to serve our patients
better and contribute more significantly to the health care service of our society. It is also our
goal to constantly strive to instill a higher degree of professionalism and improve the skills of
TCM practitioners. The Thong Chai Institute of Medical Research was set up in the aim to
achieve this objective through facilitating medical researches, conducting education and
training courses in the field of TCM.
Avenues of Financial Support
Our annual operational expenses amount to more than 2.5 million dollars. We do not
receive any financial subsidies from the Government. Besides rental income, we need to
source for external funding to meet our operational budget. The responsibility of performing
these challenging and critical tasks is assigned to a group of dedicated people who organize
numerous fund-raising activities throughout the year.
Intended use of the Funds Received
We will use the funds received to purchase Traditional Chinese Medicine, Chinese herb for
the benefits of our patients, We will continue to provide free consultations and free TCM to
them. Patients from all walks of life regardless of race, region & nationality will benefit.
Current Project for the Year 2010/2011
Thong Chai Building which houses our clinic was built in 1976. Having gone through 33
years of operations, Thong Chai Building needs a facelift. To cater for the increasing number
of patients from present of more than 700 patients to 800 or even 1000 patients daily, our
clinic has to be expanded and medical facilities and equipment need to be replaced and
upgraded. Including annual medical fund, $6 million is needed for the project this year.
