3) Areas of Research:
(i) Clinical and experimental study of peripheral paralysis and hemiplegia resulting from stroke
(ii) Clinical and experimental study of aches and pains

4) Treatment Approach:
(i) Hemiplegia is treated by means of rousing the cerebral nerve as well as loosening the muscle and tendons. The most important acupoints to be concentrated on are the phitrum etc. In order to loosen the muscles and tendons of peripheral paralysis patients, the acupoints to be focused on are the Qianzheng, etc

(ii) In the case of migraine, the acupoints to be focused on are the Siguan, etc. The acupuncture treatment will enable th ecentral nervous system to release the nerve medium thus reducing the intensity of the pain.

5) Brief History
The research department was set up in 1987. There are currently two physicians doing research in the department, namely Mr. How Sek Kwong, head of the department and Mdm. Tan Choy Tip. On every Tuesday and Thursday from 1.00pm to 3.00pm, Mr. How Sek Kwong will treat hemiplegia resulting from stroke and peripheral paralysis. As for Mdm. Tan Choy Tip, her treatment is mainly for migraine.

To date, the diagnosis and treatment are based on an overall analysis of the illness and the patients' condition, augmented by the physician's clinical experiences in the past years and "creative" treatment. Although no medical break-through is achieved so far, our first step to success starts with working earnestly and serving the patients conscientiously.

Our future goal and plan is to conduct microscopic investigation of nail fold microcirculation, hemorrheological blood tests and Doppler cerebral ultrasound, so as to make Chinese medical theory and practices more scientific and valuable and on par with Western medicine in time to come.
